Free vs Paid Manga Translator: Is $9 a Month Worth It? (Honest Comparison)
Is a free AI manga translator enough, or is it worth paying for one? It depends on how much you read. This guide compares MangaGloss Free, Creator and Pro with real numbers (pages per day, pages per month, cost per chapter) so you can work out which one fits you. Short version: if you read a chapter now and then, stay free.
Full disclosure: MangaGloss is the translator we build. That’s why we’re spelling out when you should not pay.

The plans at a glance
| Plan | Price | Pages | Watermark | Editor and glossary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No account | $0 | 5 a day | Small watermark | No |
| Free account | $0 | 30 bonus pages, once | None | No |
| Creator | $9 a month | 1,500 a month | None | Yes |
| Pro | $24 a month | 6,000 a month | None | Yes, plus priority queue |
Every plan, free included, uses the same AI pipeline: the same text detection, the same translation model, the same cleaning and typesetting. Paying doesn’t buy better translations. It buys more pages and the tools to fix them.

What you get for free
Without an account: 5 pages a day
Open the AI manga translator, drop in a raw page and translate it. No sign-up and no credit card. You get five pages every day, and the quota resets daily. Pages translated without an account carry a small watermark.
With a free account: 30 bonus pages
Sign up free and you get 30 bonus pages with no watermark. A typical manga chapter is around 20 pages, so that’s about one and a half chapters, enough to see how the AI handles a series you actually read.
When free is enough
- You read a chapter now and then, not every week.
- You only need to understand a few pages, for example a spoiler or a short one-shot.
- You want to test a series before deciding whether to follow it.
If that’s you, don’t pay. Five pages a day covers it.
When free stops being enough: the math
A weekly series releases about four chapters a month. At roughly 20 pages per chapter, that’s around 80 pages a month. Catching up on a series is far more: 50 back chapters is about 1,000 pages. Five pages a day is 150 pages a month at most, and only if you translate every single day.
| How you read | Pages a month (approx.) | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| A chapter now and then | Under 100 | Free |
| One weekly series | About 80 | Free if you translate daily, Creator if you read in one go |
| Several weekly series | 200 to 400 | Creator |
| Catching up on a long series | 1,000 or more | Creator |
| Scanlation team or agency | Several thousand | Pro |
Creator: $9 for 1,500 pages
Creator costs $9 a month for 1,500 pages. At about 20 pages per chapter that’s around 75 chapters, or less than one cent per page. You can translate a whole chapter at once instead of five pages a day. It also adds two tools free plans don’t have:
- The built-in editor. Rewrite any line, shrink text that overflows a bubble, then re-render the page. See how to fix AI manga translation mistakes.
- A per-series glossary. Character names and terms stay the same in every chapter, instead of changing from one page to the next.
Plan pages reset every month and don’t roll over, so Creator is best if you read regularly.
Pro: for teams
Pro is $24 a month for 6,000 pages, with the editor, the glossary and a priority queue. It’s built for scanlation groups and agencies that release many chapters a month. See MangaGloss for scanlators.
Don’t want a subscription?
One-time page packs are available on the pricing page. Pack pages never expire, so they suit irregular reading, like catching up on one series and then stopping.
Our advice
- Start free, without an account, and translate a few pages of a series you read.
- Sign up free for the 30 bonus pages and read a full chapter with no watermark.
- Upgrade only when five pages a day is clearly holding you back.
Frequently asked questions
Is the free manga translator lower quality than the paid one?
No. Free and paid plans use the same AI pipeline. The differences are page volume, the watermark on pages translated without an account, the editor and the glossary.
How many chapters is 1,500 pages?
About 75 chapters at around 20 pages per chapter. Webtoon and manhwa episodes vary in length, so the number depends on the series.
Do unused pages carry over?
Monthly plan pages reset at each renewal and don’t carry over. Pages from one-time packs never expire.
Can I cancel Creator any time?
Yes. You can cancel from your dashboard, and your plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for.
