The biggest technical challenge with Chinese manhua is the script divide. Mainland Chinese manhua uses simplified characters (简体字), while works from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many overseas Chinese communities use traditional characters (繁體字). Some series even mix both -- for example, a manhua set in historical China might use traditional characters for period authenticity while the author writes in simplified. Our OCR engine handles this automatically, detecting which script is on the page and reading it correctly without manual configuration.
Chinese manhua spans a wide range of genres that each present unique translation challenges. Cultivation and xianxia series use specialized vocabulary -- ranks, martial techniques, and spiritual concepts -- that need consistent translation across hundreds of chapters. Romance and modern-setting manhua use colloquial Chinese that differs significantly from formal written Chinese. Historical manhua may include classical Chinese phrases. The full-page context translation and per-series glossary work together to handle these genre-specific requirements.
