Best Manga Translator? An Honest AI Test, Timed (2026)
I tested an AI manga translator on 11 real pages: a 6-page Japanese chapter, a Korean webtoon strip, a Chinese manhua page and single Japanese pages. Real timings, what it got right, and the 5 problems we found (sound effects, overflowing bubbles, split bubbles, names without a glossary, slow re-renders). Everything shown is real MangaGloss output on original sample pages.

Is an AI manga translator good enough to read with, or to publish? I tested MangaGloss, the tool we build, on eleven real pages. Here's what it got right, and what it got wrong.
The pages: a six-page Japanese chapter, a Korean webtoon strip, a Chinese manhua page, and three single Japanese pages. All of it is original art, made for this test.
First, speed. The whole six-page chapter went in as one upload.
Fifty four seconds later, all six pages were translated and typeset.
Single pages took thirteen to forty four seconds. On a phone, the Korean strip took thirty three. Re-rendering after an edit is the slow part, at about four minutes.
Now accuracy. On the Korean webtoon, the lines read naturally. I knew you'd be here. Why did you follow me?
On the Japanese chapter, the quiet lines keep their tone. Today I messed up at work. On days like that, please come here.
The Chinese manhua page came out clean too, and the painted art was left alone.
Now the problems. We found five.
One. Sound effects are inconsistent. Here, the hand-drawn pyon was replaced with plain typed text.
But on another page, the purring sound was left in Japanese. Sound effects still need a human.
Two. Some English is too long for its bubble and runs off the edge. You fix it in the editor by shrinking the lettering.
Three. In one run, a single bubble was split into two regions, and the lines landed on top of each other. Merging them in the editor fixed the overlap.
Four. Without a glossary, names and terms can change. The menu item here became special ramen. With a glossary, it stays Midnight Tonkotsu Special.
Five. Every fix means re-rendering the page, and that took about four minutes in our tests.
So, the verdict. Speed is excellent. The translation is natural. Typesetting is clean, but you should check every bubble. Sound effects still need you.
Use it to read raws today, and as a fast first draft for scanlation or localization. Plan a human pass before you publish.
