Korean manhwa and webtoons differ from Japanese manga in several ways that affect translation. They are typically full-color and formatted as one tall vertical strip rather than traditional paneled pages. Text appears in open space, narration boxes, and thought bubbles as often as in speech bubbles, making text detection more complex. Manhwa platforms like Naver Webtoon and Kakao publish episodically -- often weekly -- so a single series can span hundreds of episodes. Name consistency across dozens of chapters is critical, and it is exactly where generic tools fall down. Korean also uses different honorific systems (hyung, oppa, sunbae) that require careful handling to preserve social context in translation.
Our pipeline processes tall vertical-scroll webtoon images natively -- no cropping, no splitting, no lost context between panels. Whether the strip is 800px or 15,000px tall, the text detector scans the entire image and preserves reading order from top to bottom.

Webtoons are designed for vertical scrolling on mobile devices, with panels flowing top to bottom in a single continuous image. This format creates unique challenges: text regions can appear anywhere along a strip that may be thousands of pixels tall, and reading order depends on vertical position rather than panel boundaries. MangaGloss processes these strips natively without cropping or splitting, so no context is lost between sections. The text detector identifies regions across the full height of the image, and translations are placed in the correct reading order regardless of strip length.
Weekly manhwa releases mean a series can accumulate 200+ episodes. Without a glossary, the same character name might be romanized differently across chapters -- '지수' could appear as 'Jisoo', 'Ji-su', or 'Jisu'. The per-series glossary solves this by locking terms once and applying them to every future translation. This is especially important for Korean honorifics and relationship terms, which carry social context that changes how dialogue reads.
